"Convert or get hurt." That's the welcome message waiting for non-Muslim inmates arriving at certain wings of British prisons. Not from the guards. Not from some bureaucratic intake form. From Islamic gangs who've figured out that a captive population with no exit and no protection is the perfect recruiting pool.
And it's working.
A report detailed by researcher and essayist John Mac Ghlionn in Conservative Review lays out what's been festering in Western prison systems for years — a systematic campaign of forced conversion, intimidation, and radicalization happening on government property, funded by government budgets, under government supervision. Non-Muslim inmates are, as Mac Ghlionn writes, "systematically targeted and pressured into converting to a religion that operates like a gang."
The numbers from the UK's Ministry of Justice tell the story with surgical precision. Muslims now make up 18% of the prison population in England and Wales. The general Muslim population in the UK sits at 6.5%. That's nearly three times the national rate concentrated behind bars. But here's the number that should stop you cold: one in five Muslims in British prisons is white. That's four times higher than the 5.8% rate in the general population.
White inmates aren't converting because they found spiritual enlightenment in their cells. They're converting because the alternative is violence.
Nick Timothy, the UK's Shadow Justice Secretary, put it plainly. "The percentage of Muslims who are white in our prisons is so vastly higher than in the general population it raises serious questions," Timothy said. He noted that "experts have warned repeatedly about forced conversions taking place behind bars, driven by Islamic gangs."
The problem isn't confined to the British Isles. American prisons are running the same experiment with the same results. Approximately 9% of inmates in U.S. federal and state penitentiaries identify as Muslim — compared to roughly 1% of the general American population. And roughly 80% of those Muslim inmates converted while incarcerated. Not before. Not on the outside. Inside the walls.
The progressive response to this data is predictable: religion provides structure, community, and meaning to incarcerated people. Which would be a more compelling argument if the conversion rate weren't being driven by gangs issuing physical threats. "Convert or get hurt" isn't a spiritual invitation. It's a protection racket wearing a religious costume.
This story lands during the week America marks the anniversary of September 11th, which makes the silence from corrections officials and politicians all the more conspicuous. We spent twenty years and trillions of dollars fighting radicalization abroad. We built entire federal agencies around the concept of preventing the next attack. And the entire time, a parallel radicalization pipeline was growing inside facilities we own, staff, and fund — converting vulnerable inmates into foot soldiers for an ideology that declared war on Western civilization.
Nobody in a position of authority wants to touch this because the conversation requires saying things that polite society has deemed impermissible. You can't address forced Islamic conversion in prisons without acknowledging that a specific ideology is doing the forcing. And in a political environment where leaders would rather debate pronoun policies than confront jihadist recruitment, the gangs running these operations know they have a free hand.
Eighteen percent of British inmates. Nine percent of American inmates. Eighty percent converted behind bars. One warning: convert or get hurt.
The recruiting ground is open. The taxpayers are paying the rent.
