The Democratic Socialists of America — the organization that literally launched Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez into Congress — just told her they won't back her 2028 presidential bid. The DSA Liberation Caucus issued a statement refusing to "endorse or give succor" to AOC's White House ambitions, citing what they called her "capitulations to imperialists."
So the woman who built her brand on being too radical for the Democratic Party is now not radical enough for the people who made her.
The timeline here is worth savoring. Back in April 2026, the New York City DSA chapter endorsed AOC's congressional reelection — standard stuff, home turf loyalty. But by July 2026, the national DSA Political Committee voted against even polling its own members on whether to endorse her for 2028. They didn't vote no on the endorsement. They voted no on asking the question. That's how far the relationship has deteriorated.
The San Francisco DSA went further, laying out a set of conditions AOC would need to meet before they'd consider support: backing BDS — boycott, divestment, and sanctions against Israel — opposing all Israel funding, and endorsing the Palestinian right of return. Requirements that would make AOC unelectable in a general election and they know it. That's not a list of conditions. That's a rejection letter dressed up as a negotiation.
What triggered the split? AOC herself poured gasoline on it. She publicly declared that "Woke 1.0 was crazy" — a comment that reads like a calculated pivot toward mainstream Democratic voters and away from the activist base that door-knocked her into office. The DSA hardliners heard it exactly the way she meant it, and they responded accordingly.
The broader picture is even worse for Democrats. This isn't just one congresswoman having a spat with one socialist caucus. This is the progressive wing of the Democratic Party splintering at the exact moment they need unity heading into midterms. The establishment wing wants electability. The activist wing wants ideological purity. And neither side is willing to pretend they're on the same team anymore.
As United Voice reported, the national organization is now functionally split between chapters that still see AOC as their standard-bearer and factions that view her as a sellout. The NYC chapter endorses her. The San Francisco chapter sets impossible conditions. The national leadership won't even let members weigh in.
Republicans don't need to run attack ads against AOC's 2028 aspirations. Her own people are writing the opposition research. The woman who once represented the future of progressive politics just got told by progressives that her future doesn't include them.
When your coalition can't agree on whether you're too radical or not radical enough, the answer is usually that you're just not very good at coalitions.
